Retrospect ... the fortnight gone by

Before I write part 3, a brief on the fortnight that passed by.

A fortnight of gruesome terrorist attack, the security lapse, the harum-scarum statements /actions by our esteemed politicians, a peace march at gateway, a firm warning to our neighbor, honoring of the martyrs and the not so brave & finally the role of news-media covering and en-cashing the hoopla post attacks.

Come December 7th, i.e. today everything seems back to normal. The horror tale has seeped into people’s sub conscious mind & likely to transform into a forgotten cause.... i sincerely hope to be proved wrong.

Anyways, saluting the true martyrs I continue with the narration of One Night at MUM-NDLS Rajdhani

one night @ mumbai - NDLS rajdhani Part 2

Hmmm... I think the Economics Concept of " Diminishing Marginal Utility" applies to even we part-time penners.

After writing the first part of One night @ Mumbai - NDLS Rajdhani i was approached by boredom striking my writing pursuits. So the unusual lag. I seek clemency to my avid readers.

Part 2 contimued...

So the journey began ... "Dhadum..dhadum..dhadumdhadum..." rattling of the railway tracks could be heard distinctly. So here i was standing in the passage which adjoined the doors of faecal closets of a AC 2 tier boogie starkly experiencing the Indian-Western Divide.

I had to find Mr. P.K. (Boozer) Singh.
I approached the attendent there finding him speak a language familiar. He was speaking tamil. A sudden grin embarked on my face -( Namb Oor aka My Country-Man) which soon vanished and got translated into a concern realizing I could hardly speak my language.

With great difficulty I spoke " Naan inga lagguage vikkatumma - Mr P.k. Singh - TT meet pannanum. TT yenga irrupa??"

The cryptanalyst attendent had great comprehension skills . I think he must have known greek and hebrew too. He allowed me to keep the luggage with him and advised me to go to the "2-tier Pantry" where i would find a TT with a Big facial scar.

3 min later ... I was standing in front of Mr. Boozer Singh. Introducing myself " Sir , I am aniruddha. I think Mr. Kurien spoke to you?" seeming my hapless best.

"Haan Haan, Ticket dekhao" a rough voice spoke out.
I showed him my e-ticket.

He with a confused expression he said " Yeh to e-ticket hain"

With equal confusion and utmost innocence i replied " Haan. e-ticket hain".

" Arey bhai , e-ticket lekar tum train main kaise chhad gaye. Yeh ticket valid nahi hain."
lecturing me that if my ticket does not get confirmed before the commencement of the journey i cannot board the train- as the amount paid gets automatically recredited to my payment account. "Sorry I cant help you".

Pleading my genuine ignorance i pursuaded him to help me out. Sounding tougher now he said " 4000 lagega agar AC 2 main jaaoge aur 3000 lagega agar 3 -tier main jaaoge".

I checked my purse - Rs. 1000 deficit. Looking more misfortunate than before I replied " Sir sirf 2000 rupaiy hain. Ek Hazaar baad main de doo to chalega - Kisi bhi station mein ATM aayega to nikaal kar de doonga"

Sounding frustrated he said " Arey yaar. tumhari problem hi kitni saari hain. Ek kaam karo kisi bhi 3-tier boogie mein jaakar baith jaao. Main aaonga wahan par thodi der main"

Out of sight in seconds I went back to pick up my luggage, thanked the attendent and proceeded to the 3-tier dabbas.

One night @ Mumbai - NDLS Rajdhani

Welcome Back Guys!!
I am back in mumbai after an awesome DIWALI.
If you people have ever thought you would realise DIWALI is the only festival in india which has PAN INDIA festivities. But that's out of context to the present topic.

I know the title is inspired by chetan bhagat's novel but the plot is way different. The commonality is investment bankers narrating stories about a night which sets off on a train.

It was 24th of october 2008. I finished my work for the day early ( Stock markets got plundered and Bond Markets hardly had any activity). I was hurrying up to catch my mumbai- delhi rajdhani. I was going back home after 3 long months and was too excited to visit home.
All of my office colleugues wished me a pleasant journey following which my MD giving me the customary DIWALI present. I wished everyone goodbye and left office at 3.10 p.m.

As all finance eccentric's in US my forecast too went amiss and I reached the train station way ahead of schedule at 3.30 p.m.

I was definitely going to delhi but......... I was travelling on an AC 2 -tier 255-waitlisted E-ticket. I used the IVR facility of Indian Raliways to confirm my status. The Electronic Lady politely told me the status has improved to 160-waitlisted. The surge of optimism in me made me to wait until the charts were put up. The optimism came about because of my CONNECTIONS with one HIGH PROFILE railway personnel "Mr. Kurien".

The wait was finally over. The Chart was put up at 4.30 p.m. - 10 minutes before the departure.
But it was really difficult to poush through the crowd and make way to check my status. I was successful in checking my name in 4 of the 10 charts put up but none had my name. After the arduous deed of fighting my way out of Charting Boards I called up my Dad.

" Appa the tickets are not confirmed" ( with a strong sense of being befooled by a Malabari)
Dad replied: " Dont worry beta (son) i will call up Mr. Kurien and ask him"
Dad called a minute later " Beta he is not picking up the phone. Try speaking to any of the TTs there ( which actually meant bribe him to get a seat if you dont get it easily)".

I kept the phone down and hunted for the black-coat-ed guys. Met 2 of them. Both asked me to meet some conductor guy. Before i could figure out who the conductor guy was, my debilitated cell phone rang again. It was dad again.

" Beta get into the train - dont worry - have spoken to Mr. Kurien - Just speak to Mr. P.K. Singh - he is AC 3- tier incharge - he will help you out - take down his number - 9@$#%@#$#*"

Suddenly a qucik reassessment changed my stance on Mr. Kurien from "Short" to "Long".
Meanwhile rajdhani whistled signalling it was TIME TO LEAVE.
I got onto the train releived & convinced CONNECTIONS do work in India.

Amarnath Land – An ECO dispute or EGO dispute?

The situation at Jammu and Kashmir is becoming critical day by day. I would like to share my percept on the Issue:

A Hindu says

Dispute is over the land provided to the Amarnath Shrine board for provisioning better infrastructure and facilities to the thousands who walk the tedious stretch every year to witness the “Shiva Linga”.

How can the government revoke its decision by succumbing to the Muslim Community? We will show them our strength and the government would have to give in. It’s a dispute over a land size of just 100 acres.

Amarnath is an important pilgrimage site for all HINDUS and we Hindus would settle for no less than 100 acres. We Hindus had been pursuing the matter for so many years now and would not let go off it so easily.

A Muslim says

How can they allot 100 acres of Forest Land for such a purpose? How can we ignore the ecological imbalance it would cause to our KASHMIR? We would not let them have the land and put our KASHMIR’s ecology and natural beauty to peril.

It is simple disgusting that the Governor of J&K acted irresponsibly and in haste to provide the land. It was important for the J&K govt. to revoke the decision which was against the people of KASHMIR.

I say

Create an ECO-friendly Infrastructure on the land that was provided to Amarnath Shrine Board.

For further details please attend a conference “SAMRIDDHI 08” on GREEN INFRASTRUCTURE organized by Goa Institute of Management in association with BARC on August 30 and 31st 2008.
